Meta Wrote 6,500 Words About Giving Everyone an All-Knowing Assistant. Concision Remains on the Roadmap.
On August 10th Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a 6,500-word essay describing a future in which people have personal AI agents capable of helping with education, businesses, and everyday decisions. Meta also released Muse Glimmer, an open-source model designed to run on a personal computer, and said developers would get access to the more powerful Muse Spark 1.2.
The proposal is essentially to give everyone an endlessly available expert who knows their goals, offers personalized advice, and never says, “I haven’t had a chance to look at that yet.” Humanity has spent decades trying to schedule a 30-minute meeting with four people. Meta would now like to add an all-knowing fifth attendee.
Critics raised concerns about safety, control, and whether concentrating the ecosystem around Meta would truly distribute power. Those are serious questions. The less serious but equally inevitable question is how long it takes before someone’s personal superintelligence begins every answer with, “Based on your recent engagement with patio furniture...”
AI Is Saving Time by Using All the Electricity at Once.
Reuters reported on August 11 that the U.S. Energy Information Administration expects national power consumption to reach new records in both 2026 and 2027. The agency projected demand rising from 4,195 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 to 4,268 billion in 2026 and 4,391 billion in 2027, driven partly by AI-focused data centers as well as broader electrification.
This is the efficiency story nobody puts in the product demo. AI can summarize a 40-page report in seconds, provided a building the size of an airport is quietly consuming electricity somewhere off-screen. The executive dashboard says “time saved.” The power grid has opened a separate workstream.
The industry continues to promise that AI will help us do more with less. It has simply not specified that “less” refers to patience, available transmission capacity, or the number of executives who can explain a kilowatt-hour without calling Facilities.
AI Can Forecast a Typhoon. Your Calendar Is Still Mostly Guesswork.
Reuters reported on August 11, with an update on August 13, that Chinese AI weather systems are increasingly working alongside traditional forecasting models. Researchers said systems such as Fengwu, Pangu, and Fuxi can produce forecasts much faster than physics-based supercomputer systems while matching or outperforming them on some measures.
During Typhoon Dolphin, Fengwu reportedly predicted the time and location of landfall five days ahead to within 30 minutes and 30 kilometers. The models still trail conventional systems in predicting storm intensity and remain a complement rather than a replacement.
That is a sensible division of labor. AI predicts where the typhoon will land. Traditional models estimate how strong it will be. Humans schedule a status meeting during the evacuation window and ask whether everyone has seen the latest deck.
The important story is that faster forecasts could improve preparation for floods, evacuations, farming, and transportation. The AIronic story is that a model can now track a massive atmospheric system across an ocean while Outlook still describes three executives as “tentative.”
Most Japanese Companies Are Using AI Carefully, Which Is Very Disruptive to the Disruption Narrative.
A survey published this month found that more than 80% of Japanese companies were using AI only in limited ways or not at all. About 60% had adopted it in only parts of their operations, 18% had not decided whether to introduce it, 6% were not considering it, and 16% said AI had become an integral company-wide tool.
This is less “AI transformation” and more “AI has been invited to one department and is waiting for a badge.” It is also a useful reminder that corporate adoption rarely moves at keynote speed. The demo takes seven minutes. The rollout requires security review, procurement, training, governance, data cleanup, and one person asking whether the chatbot can update the spreadsheet without changing the spreadsheet.
No surveyed company expected to reduce its AI budget. So enthusiasm remains strong; deployment is simply expressing itself through the traditional enterprise channels of pilots, committees, and budget lines that say “TBD” with remarkable confidence.
The Global AI Race Added a Team-Selection Screen.
Reuters reported that the United States was preparing to tell dozens of partner countries they could be excluded from a U.S.-led AI coalition if they also joined China’s competing framework. The report was based on a U.S. official and a draft State Department letter, which Reuters said could still change.
The U.S.-led Pax Silica initiative focuses on AI models, semiconductors, critical minerals, and secure supply chains. China launched a rival international AI cooperation organization in July. Kazakhstan, a participant in both, appears to have discovered the geopolitical equivalent of accepting two overlapping meeting invitations and hoping nobody checks the attendee list.
The stakes are serious: technology standards, access to critical resources, national security, and influence over how AI develops. The format, however, is familiar to anyone who has survived a major platform migration. Choose an ecosystem. Commit to the roadmap. Do not mention the competing vendor during the quarterly business review.
That closes another week in AI, where personal agents became all-knowing, weather models became faster, electricity records became goals nobody remembered setting, and global alliances began resembling enterprise software contracts. The machines keep accelerating. The humans would like a short extension to complete the risk assessment.
